1. Contrast- Debby Pastrana is sobbing recklessly; but this desperate mother’s cries are drowned out by the thunder of 13,000 fans and the vein-bursting, heart-leaping, death-taunting sounds of an adrenaline rush that beckon her son from within his head.
2. Teaser- A duct-tape cast must surely be the work of a child playing doctor with household items or a health insurance-less ‘bum’ with a broken limb. But I’d be surprised to see either competing in the X-Games, let alone winning. Why then, did Travis Pastrana, 24 years old and self-reportedly making over $¼ million each year, have to resort to wrapping his own leg in duct tape? It all started with a kid and a bike.
3. Mystery- It can be thrown from a plane, hurdled into the Grand Canyon, and flipped through the air, all without irreversible damage. It breathes, eats, sleeps, and talks, but knows no fear and no apprehension. It is Travis Pastrana.
4. Build on a Quote- It sounds like a Keanu Reeves line from a cheesy, over-the-top action movie: “If you step wrong, you’ve got 30 minutes before you bleed out.” The circumstances behind this quote, however, couldn’t be more real.
5. List- Concussions incurred: twenty-five. Broken bones suffered: sixty. Surgeries undergone: seventeen. Travis Pastrana is either the world’s unluckiest man or Motocross’ biggest sensation.
6. Question- If you could soar through the sky like a bird in flight; completely unrestrained, nothing weighing you down, would you? Travis Pastrana would, and he did.
7. Cliché- “The sky’s the limit” takes on a whole new meaning for Travis Pastrana. To a young man who knows no limits, not even the sky can stop him.
